MMA Trading Card Eras
Pioneer Era (1995-2008):
MMA trading cards began in Japan, with early sets like the 1995 BBM Pro-Wrestling (featuring Pancrase and RINGS fighters) and the 2006 Pride FC set—the first officially licensed MMA cards. In the US, MMA cards were initially promos with video games or DVDs until the 2008 Donruss Americana II 'Ring Kings' subset showcased up to thirty UFC fighters.
Golden Era (2009 – 2012):
In 2008, Topps and Zuffa, LLC signed an exclusive deal to produce UFC trading cards. The first major set, 2009 Topps UFC Round 1, debuted on February 5, 2009. Between 2009 and 2012, Topps released the first licensed UFC rookie and autograph cards for many MMA legends.
Silver Era (2012-2020):
The UFC developed into a global entity, elevating its athletes to international prominence. Following the acquisition of Strikeforce, the organization integrated women's divisions, and both these athletes and emerging stars started to be featured on trading cards.
Modern Era (2021- Present):
Panini's acquisition of the license for UFC trading cards signified the beginning of the Modern Era and continued by Topps. This period was characterized by a rise in the popularity of parallel and variant cards, as well as limited edition releases and premium sets.
